Learn how to connect with nature – and your family too!

The world is easier than ever to quickly connect to people, but it can bring us further away from connecting to the natural world, ourselves, and from forming deeper, meaningful relationships.

Kinda seems that everyone is dying to get your attention, leaving little left over for personal growth, family, and getting outside, right?

We feel that way too… and want to change things up!

At Wilder Self we’re going to help you out. Get to know the world around you on a deeper level and form real, meaningful connections to those around you. Raise kids that can name the plants in the yard and have the confidence instilled from knowing the wilds around them like friends and siblings.

outdoor family wilder self

Growing up banished from the house until dinnertime, we knew the wilds around us inside and out. We could tell you where the snakes and rabbits would be, and what month the blackberries were ripe. We could predict the weather for the next few days by looking at the sky.

This wildness turned to the occasional weekend out hiking or camping. Weather was noticed, but not tracked – instead of running through the rain, we ran out of it. We noticed in passing that berries were ripe but couldn’t tell you if the spring windstorms would affect the plum harvest this year.

We lost a lot as we grew up.

And we wanted it back.

That’s why this site exists.

Over the years of work, bills, movies, and social media we came to a realization: we connect more with our technology, our workplaces, and our distractions than we do with the real world and our loved ones.

Talk about a gut punch.

With a young kid and another on the way, we didn’t ger outside into the wild more than once or twice this year. Work makes us too tired to get outside. Or so we would tell ourselves. I’m too tired became the norm.

Is this all there is to life now?

No, we knew better.

A couple of former wilderness survival instructors who let us get too far into the modern world. We have the tools needed to connect anyone to the natural world, whether in a city, a suburb, or a tent in the woods, we just needed to use them.

And we’re going to share them with you along the way so you can do the same too.

So, yeah, we’re just a couple of people who like the outdoors. But we want to grow more in touch with it as we grow our family. And get more time in it.

We’ve started to share our thoughts on how to deepen our connection to the world, grow more aware of the natural cycles around us, and grow some good kids along the way.

Come on, join us. Let’s play again and get dirty 🙂
